Through The Bible in a Year - June 9, 2026
"Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?... Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?" - Matthew 6:26-30
After crushing His audience with impossible standards—you can't measure up, you can't make it up—Jesus does something surprising.
He points to birds. "Look at the birds of the air. They neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?"
He points to flowers. "Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow. They neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these."
If God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
What is Jesus doing? He's showing them grace. Essential grace. God taking care of those who cannot take care of themselves. God providing for those who cannot provide for themselves—whether it's birds, or flowers, or you.
Imagine the scene. Jesus has just told you:
You can't keep the law (anger = murder, lust = adultery)
You can't fix it with good works (your motives are tainted)
You're headed for judgment
And then He says: "Look at the birds. Look at the flowers."
Your eyes follow His gestures. You see birds flying, landing, eating. You see wildflowers blooming in brilliant colors. None of them are anxious. None of them are striving. They're simply receiving what God provides.
And then your eyes come back to Jesus.
"Put your faith in Me—the One who provides for those who cannot provide for themselves."
The path to understanding is the path of faith. If God takes care of birds and flowers, why wouldn't He take care of you?
Respond: What are you anxious about today?
Jesus says: "Which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?"
Anxiety doesn't help. Striving doesn't save you. Performance doesn't earn God's provision.
What does? Faith. Trust. Believing that the God who feeds birds and clothes wildflowers will take care of you.
This week, when anxiety rises, practice this:
Look at creation. Go outside. Watch birds. Look at flowers. Notice how they receive what they need without striving or worrying.
Remember God's care. If He feeds them and clothes them, He will certainly feed and clothe you. You are of more value than many sparrows.
Put your faith in the Provider. Stop trying to measure up or make it up. Start trusting the One who provides for those who cannot provide for themselves.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, I am anxious about so many things. I'm striving, worrying, trying to control outcomes I can't control. But You feed the birds. You clothe the wildflowers. You take care of those who cannot take care of themselves. Help me trust You. I can't measure up. I can't make it up. But You can provide what I need. Increase my faith. Decrease my anxiety. I put my trust in You—the One who provides. In Jesus' name, Amen.
